Many crewmembers, flight attendants and pilots, don't actually live in the city where they are "based" (a base is just the city that you normally start and end your trips in.) Many live in another city and fly in on their own on the day they go to work or the day before. These crew are called "commuters".
If a commuter has to fly in the day before their trip starts or stay over a day after their trip ends, it can be very expensive to pay for hotel rooms, especially in expensive cities like New York. So, they will often get together, kind of like in a club, and rent a small house or apartment near the airport that they and other commuters can stay in between trips. These are called "crash pads" because nobody really lives there, they just "crash" there!
Sometimes, as many as 20 crewmembers will share a crash pad to keep costs low. Of course, they have to plan carefully so that not everyone is at the crash pad on the same day!
Our friend Diana is advertising the small house below for flight attendants who commute to Los Angeles from other cities. It's kind of cute, huh? Maybe we can find out how much each commuter would have to pay to stay here.
